| Description: | Since its founding in 1967, the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) has dedicated its efforts to preserving, supporting and promoting independent literary publishing in the United States. CLMP serves one of the most active segments of American arts and culture: the independent publishers of our finest fiction, poetry and prose. Literary magazines and presses do the backstage work of American literature: discovering new writers; supporting mid-career writers; publishing the creative voices of communities underrepresented in mainstream commercial culture; and preserving literature for future readers by keeping worthy, if not lucrative, books in print. Independent literary publishing requires a unique balance of art and business. Organizational strength and good business practices are as necessary to the survival of these publishers as the editorial work they do is necessary to the vitality of American letters. As a membership-based service organization, the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses guides literature through the business of publishing. CLMP believes that stronger organizations and operations result in our members' literature reaching a larger and more diverse audience. CLMP's practical approach to this philosophy is two tiered. Our services and resources are designed to develop each member's publishing capacity through increased marketing and organizational skills, while CLMP also serves as a nexus of communication, promoting shared learning across the field as a whole. The field of literary publishing incorporates a wide diversity of presses and magazines: those with budgets of less than $5,000 to those of more than $1 million dollars; publishers working in large cities, rural areas, and every place in between; and representing an astounding array of aesthetic and editorial missions. The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses unifies the strengths of this diverse field by serving literary publishers' common needs and goals while celebrating their independent voices.
