Erie County's only provider of comprehensive writing arts and spoken word programs, 27 year-old Just Buffalo (founded in 1975) has established itself as a regional resource and a national model, both for the high quality of its programming and for the thoughtful, strategic ways it has approached administration and operations. Among the Center's honors and awards are: Commitment to Education Silver Award, Buffalo Alliance for Education, 1998 - Certificate of Merit, Governor of New York, for Empire State Partnership program, 1998; New York State Governors Award for Excellence in the Arts, 1997; Buffalo Mayor's Partnership Award, Buffalo Alliance for Education, 1997; One of 8 organizations in the United States selected for participation in Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Fund Audiences for Literature Network program, 1997-2001; Organization of the Year, Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County, 1990. Just Buffalo programs include: readings, lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and residencies by writers; writers-in-education programs for children, teachers, and parents; interdisciplinary programs combining music, dance and the spoken word; Spoken Arts Radio, on NPR affiliate WBFO; Lannan Literary Videos on local cable television; annual writing competitions; and publications. Writers and literary artists who have read and presented there represent a Who's Who among contemporary writers.
