Description: ORGANIZATION PROFILE TAPROOT WORKSHOPS & JOURNALS holds approximately 50 workshops per year for writers who range in age from 55-113. In the fall semester, 500 members were reached. Founded in 1975, Taproot has enrolled approximately 15,000 members throughout its history. Taproot writers meet in small groups of 15-18 members, in locations appropriate to all the decades of our aging: libraries, senior centers, public schools, adult day care centers, nursing homes. The low fee of $50 per 10-session semester makes Taproot workshops available to almost all of us, and scholarships are available for needy writers. Taproot: The Semi-Annual Anthology Taproot, an anthology of approximately 115 pages, contains the best writing from our workshops. Taproot editors are all professional. Taproot is distributed to libraries and schools, and subscribed to by individuals. Approximately 2,000 copies are printed annually. "Taproot Talks to Children" : The Intergenerational Program - Taproot Talks to Children unites Taproot elders, teachers and pupils in a focused and time-tested 16-year-old program Taproot holds 6-9 intergenerational programs for elementary and middle school children annually. - Approximately 1,500 children are reached per year in these programs. Taproot in the Wider Community - Taproot has been recognized by the National Council on the Aging for its emphasis on education and health in accord with our national agenda. In presentations by Taproot's director to the National Council on the Aging, Taproot Talks to Children has been recognized as a model intergenerational program. Taproot Printing & Publications publishes books by local writers such as David Bouchier and Marguerite Mudge. Taproot has held events in partnership with local businesses such as Borders Books and Music.
