Description: ORGANIZATION PROFILE WELLS COLLEGE is one of the oldest women's liberal arts colleges in the United States and the oldest Women's college in New York State still dedicated to its original mission. A four-year college granting the bachelor of arts degree, Wells is private and nonsectarian. The college was established in1868 by Henry Wells, a legendary figure in 19th century American history. Wells formed the American Express Company in 1850, becoming its first president. In 1852, he helped form the Wells Fargo Express. Henry Wells wanted to establish a college that would provide women with the same educational opportunities as men. The idea of providing a rigorous liberal arts education for women is still the foundation of the Wells experience today. The campus is located in Aurora, New York, a village of 500 on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes. Wells is a half hour from Auburn and Ithaca, an hour from Syracuse and Rochester, and five hours from New York City. LITERARY SERIES PROFILE: Since the early 1970's, Wells has had a very active VISITING WRITERS SERIES. The Series brings to campus an average of eight writers a year. In addition to giving readings, which are free and open to the public, visiting writers conduct writing workshops, participate in classes and discussions, hold individual conferences, and attend meals with students. Most writers are on campus for a day or two, but there are also residencies that range from three days to a week. In addition to support from the college, the Series has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writing Fellows Program and various private funding sources. There have been over two hundred visiting writers, including many Pulitzer and National Book Award winners, and even a winner of the Nobel Prize. We've also had many emerging writers-an eclectic mix overall, but always those who would contribute to the college's literary and educational programs and be interesting and exciting to the community at large.
