| Description: | ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE POETRY ON THE LOOSE is a nonprofit corporation which has presented poetry performance events and other programs since 1993. The goals of Poetry on the Loose are to provide a platform for the presentation of exciting original work, to develop new audiences for poetry, and to encourage experimentation in the public performance of aesthetic texts. Poetry on the Loose insists on Whitman's radical democratic vision of America. It is a non-academic, grassroots, community-based organization. The door is open wide. LITERARY SERIES PROFILE: The Poetry on the Loose Reading/Performance Series has presented over a hundred programs over the last eight years. Performance modes have included musical and dance accompaniment, collaborative pieces, inprovisation, and site-specific events, as well as traditional readings from behind a lectern. Featured readers have included Lyn Lifshin, Janine Pommy Vega, Mikhail Horowitz, Ray Freed, and the prize-winning slam teams from Texas and NYC, as well as many local writers. For several years events have been held in the Unitarian Universalist Church, 6 Orchard Street, Middletown NY 10940. After every featured reader, an open reading allows audience members to read their work. There is never a required charge, though donations are welcome. |
