| Description: | ORGANIZATION PROFILE SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY was officially chartered in 1870 as a private, coeducational institution offering programs in the physical sciences and modern languages. Syracuse University is located in Syracuse, New York, the geographic center of the state and approximately 250 miles northwest of New York City. Its mission is to promote learning through teaching, research, scholarship, creative accomplishment, and service. Syracuse University's 1997 undergraduate full-time class of 10, 813 includes 1,728 (16 percent) African American, Asian American, Native American and Latino students. Of these, 780 are African American. Of the entering freshmen class of 2,587, there are 472 (18 percent) students from under represented groups. LITERARY SERIES PROFILE: The RAYMOND CARVER READING SERIES brings poets and prose writers to Syracuse University to give readings to a mixed audience of university students, faculty, and residents of the local community. Readings are held on select Wednesdays a 5:45 PM in Gifford Auditorium on the Syracuse University campus. The readings are free. Recent readers in the series include MIROSLAV HOLUB, JOYCE CAROL OATES, THOM JONES, TOBIAS WOLFF, BRIGIT PEGEEN KELLY, PATRICIA SMITH, SHARON OLDS, and DENIS JOHNSON. |
