LITERARY SERIES PROFILE: In addition to airing such national offerings as NEW LETTERS ON THE AIR and Garrison Keillor's WRITER'S ALMANAC, the station produces literature programs that include features about local and visiting authors, story and poetry readings, and READERS AND WRITERS ON THE AIR, a contemporary literature call-in series supported with public funds via the NYS Council on the Arts Literature Program and additionally by the New York Council for the Humanities and several private foundations. READERS AND WRITERS ON THE AIR provides an opportunity for the station's listeners to interact directly with authors who join the host, Ellen Rocco, for this monthly call-in. In conjunction with the series, the station purchases copies of each of the books discussed for each of the 150 public libraries within its listening area and for public school students whose teachers incorporate a book into their curricula. (For the 1998-99 season, about 50 classes were using books from our series.) |
