(IAWA)was founded to promote the creation, publication and dissemination of Italian American literature, to encourage cooperation and free interaction among writers, students and others of all backgrounds engaged in Italian American and related literary activities and to foster an appreciation of Italian American literature. Towards these ends, the following activities/mailings are now in place: MONTHLY NEWSLETTER contains a calendar of events either sponsored by IAWA, or events by individual members of IAWA or events of interest to Italian American writers such as contests and workshops. To place your name on our newsletter mailing list, send your name & address to IAWA Newsletter; P.O. Box 2011; N.Y., N.Y. 10013. OPEN READING is held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at the Cornelia St. Café (29 Cornelia St. Café ) from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M.. Sign-up starts at 6 P.M.; readers have 5 minutes to read their work. Admission: $5 includes drink. STEERAGE READINGS of Italian American literature or literature of interest to the Italian American writers are held once a month at a selected Barnes & Noble. PAOLUCCI AWARD FOR ITALIAN AMERICAN WRITING is an annual contest started in 1998 that awards the winner with a prize of $250 and a public reading; the 1998 category was poetry, the 1999 category was prose fiction.
