Biography: (1819-1892) Poet. Walt Whitman moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1823, when he was four years old, and lived there for much of his life. He taught school in Woodbury, New York; the schoolhouse has been restored. West Hills, Huntington Station, New York is the site of Whitman's birth, built in 1819 by Whitman's father, it is preserved and open to public with many artifacts and original manuscripts. 516-427-5240. He taught school in Smithtown, New York in 1837-38; the schoolhouse has been moved to Old Bethpage, New York. Whitman moved to Manhattan, New York, staying at 113 East 10th Street. The United States Postal Service honored Henry James in 2019 with the issuance of its thirty-second stamp in the Literary Arts series. |
