Biography: (1859-1916) Novelist, playwright. Sholem Aleichem was born in Russia, lived his last years in the United States and died in New York City. Throughout his life, he wrote novels, short stories, and plays, all exclusively in Yiddish. The musical "Fiddler on the Roof" is based on some of his short stories. He was the father of the writer, Lyalya Kaufman, and the grandfather of the novelest, Bel Kaufman. |
