| Full Name: Samson Occom | ||
| Biography: (1723-1792) Writer. Occom was born in Connecticut and spent most of his life on Long Island with the Montauk tribe. He became a Christian convert. He spent a great deal of time envisioning and raising money for a Native American College. Despite these efforts, his story tells of how those funds went on to fund Dartmouth, a white college. He wrote many books including an autobiography: "A Short Narrative of My Life" (1768) which is thought to be the first English book published by a Native American. He is most famous for his sermon/poem "A Sermon Preached at the Execution of Moses Paul" (1772). |
