Biography: (1890-1948) Poet, novelist. Claude McKay is seen as the most important poet of the Harlem Renaissance, in that he received great national and international praise and recognition. Born in Jamaica, he lived off and on in Harlem for many years. He wrote the first best seller by an African-American. McKay was also on the editorial staff of Max Eastman's newspaper the "Liberator." |
