Biography: (1886-1950) Poet, editor. William Rose Benet was born in Fort Hamilton, New York. He graduated from Yale in 1907, held several positions in the publishing field, and in 1920 became associate editor of the Literary Review of the New York Post. Four years later he resigned to become one of the founders of the Saturday Review of Literature, which became the Saturday Review. In 1932 he collected the poetry of his second wife, Elinor Wylie, into a single volume, and in 1938, with Norman Holmes Pearson, edited the Oxford Anthology of American Literature. His brother was Stephen Vincent Benet. His fourth wife was the children's writer Marjorie Flack. |
