(1902-1967) Poet, writer, "Poet Laureate of Harlem." Langston Hughes worked, growing onions on a truck farm on Staten Island, in 1922. Hughes was a major figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Joplin, Missouri, Hughes moved to Manhattan from Missouri in 1921; he studied at Columbia University, and later lived at 20 East 127th Street, New York, New York.
