Full Name: Lorenzo Da Ponte
Biography:
(1749-1838) Italian poet, librettist. He worked in Vienna with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on the librettos for Le Nozzi Di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte. He emigrated to New York and attempted to establish opera there, with little success. He became a professor and lecturer at Columbia University in Italian literature, the first to lecture on Dante. A memorial to Da Ponte is located in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York.
