Biography: (1887-1940) African-American leader, proponent of black nationalism, essayist, publisher. Born in Jamaica, Garvey worked in the Jamaican press before becoming interested in African history and black nationalism during a visit to London. In 1914, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and in 1916 he moved to Harlem and opened a branch of the UNIA there. Garvey's weekly paper "Negro World" was a success and had a large circulation. |
