Biography:
BRUCE BENNETT was born in 1940 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bruce started to write poetry when he was eight. In the 1970s his poems began appearing in magazines and anthologies. He received his AB, AM and PhD from Harvard, and taught English at Oberlin College from 1967-70, where he co founded and served as an editor of Field: Contemporary Poetry and Poetics. In 1971 he co-founded and served as an editor of Ploughshares while living and writing in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1971, he married art historian Bonnie Apgar, and lived in Florence, Italy for two years. Since 1973, he has taught English and Creative Writing at Wells College in Aurora, New York, where he is currently Professor of English, Director of Creative Writing, and author of three volumes of poems, Straw Into Gold (Cleveland State, 1984), I Never Danced With Mary Beth (Foothills, 1991), and Taking Off (Orchises, 1992), and several poetry chapbooks. He has reviewed contemporary poetry books in a number of journals and magazines, including The New York Times Book Review and Harvard Review. Since the early 1980's, he has been an Associate Editor at State Street Press. Two new chapbooks, Garretman (Foothills) and Maneuvers (Clandestine Press), will appear this summer, and Navigating the Distances: Poems New and Selected will be published in Spring 1999 by Orchises Press. Bruce has two children, Evan and Millicent; also a horse, six cats, and eleven ducks. Since 1973 he has taught English and creative writing at Wells College, where he directs the Visiting Writers Series and the Wells College Book Arts Center. He is the author of eleven chapbooks and three full-length collections of poetry, including Taking Off, published by Orchises Press in 1992. TITLE OF BOOK: Web-Watching.
