Biography:
Alice B. Fogel's most recent book, Be That Empty, was a national poetry bestseller in 2008. Other poetry collections include Elemental and I Love This Dark World. Her manuscript of poems, Interval, based on Bach's Goldberg Variations, has been a finalist at numerous competitions, including the National Poetry Society, Tupelo, and Copper Canyon. Her poems have appeared in many anthologies, including Best American Poetry, Claiming the Spirit Within, and Hass's Poet's Choice, and in dozens of journals, including Iowa Review, Many Mountains Moving, Third Coast, Ploughshares, Yankee, TriQuarterly, Chelsea, The Journal, and many more, and her work has been nominated for four Pushcart Prizes. Her awards include an individual artist's fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a New England Poetry Club award, the Alligator Juniper award, and a grant from the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, among others. Alice has taught undergraduate and graduate writing courses at the University of New Hampshire, Antioch, Salem, Colby-Sawyer, and Keene State Colleges, as well as workshops and artist-in-the-schools programs at a variety of library, summer program, and public and private schools for all age levels, working for the New Hampshire Writers Project, the Humanities and Arts Councils, Chautauqua, and private institutions. She organizes alternative arts and education opportunities, and continues to teach as a poetry mentor to private students on a regular basis. Her poems have been recorded in numerous venues and occasionally put to music. Her most recent book is Strange Terrain: A Poetry Handbook for the Reluctant Reader, a painless nonacademic guide to feeling more comfortable with poetry. The book demystifies poetry for individuals, reading groups, and teachers, while also showing how to value the mystery that remains, and includes discussion questions, games and syllabus suggestions. Alice leads reading workshops and professional development seminars based on the book's "step" program. In addition to her work writing and teaching, Alice is a theatrical costumer, custom clothier specializing in refashioning (www.lyriccouture.com), and mother of three, living in rural New Hampshire near the Vermont border. Author can supply books and will donate one to any venue where she reads.
