| Biography: WILLIAM SEATON, director of Poetry on the Loose, has published in many journals including Chelsea, Heaven Bone, Wordsmith, and Oblique. In addition to his own poetry he is a translator of ancient Greek lyricists and twentieth century German dadaists, among others. Active in poetry performance throughout his career, he participated in happenings in the 60s and was a central figure among the Cloud House poets in the 70s. His events blending theater, art, and poetry include Wordriver (at the Blue Dolphin Performance Space in San Francisco), the Text+Image Show (at the Catskill Gallery in Catskill), Cityscapes (at the Orange Hall Gallery in Middletown), and the Electronic Poetry Shotgun (on Iowa City cable television). He coproduced Poetry for the People on KPOO and produced Words in the Air for University of Iowa television. For the last eight years he has run the Poetry on the Loose series in Middletown, New York. In addition to his poetry, Seaton has published scholarly articles on topics such as Sappho, medieval German mystical verse, African American oral narrative, and literary theory. He has taught at the University of Iowa, Long Island University, and SUNY/New Paltz as well as in the New York State prison system and in high schools in Nigeria and Bedford-Stuyvesant. He is a recipient of the Ada Louise Ballard Fellowship in the Humanities and the Helen Fairall Award in Comparative Literature, as well as Poets & Writers and NYSCA Decentralization grants. |
